Hello!
I thought I would start out by introducing myself and telling you a little about me.
My name is Brooklyn Sawyer and I am an Author. I published my first book on December 22, 2013 and another in January of 2014. I am almost finished writing the third and final book in my trilogy, A Faerie Tale.
I have always loved reading. In fact, reading helped me through a very hard time in my life. In 2009, after being rushed to the emergency room seconds away from loosing my life, I was diagnosed with Cancer. When I had my surgery to remove it, they found even more Cancer. I was staged at 3c Ovarian. I went through some pretty rough operations followed by six months of chemotherapy. It seemed like everything that could go wrong, did. I had an anaphylactic reaction to my first two treatments and almost died with the first reaction.
The people in my life were great, from my family all the way to my Nurses and Doctors. What got me through it the most was reading. I was able to escape my life and loose myself into someone else's. I mean when your oncologist tells you that he isn't guaranteeing that the treatment will work and along with all of your other Doctors, he believes that your chances of survival are very slim, I definitely wanted to escape.
I was able to get through the six months of chemo, even though it took it's toll on me, with the help of my books. The day came for me to get the test results to see how I had responded to the chemo. I was told to expect to have Radiation after the Chemo was finished. When my Oncologist came into the room he was smiling. He told me that he was not going to be setting me up to start Radiation. All of my scans showed that there was no more Cancer. I had beat all of the odds and was officially Cancer free.
I can't explain to you the emotions that went through me. Unless you have been there, I don't think you would truly understand. I had gone from knocking on deaths door to getting a second chance at life.
I was lost for awhile. I wasn't sure what to do or who I was anymore. I had always been a Mother, that was all I knew. I was the type of mom that revolved her life around her child. During my Journey, my baby girl grew up on me. She had graduated high school and went on to college. My husband and I were empty nesters. It was something I wasn't ready for.
So, what does a person like me do? Well, I had to find myself. I know it probably sounds cheesy, but I honestly did not know who I was anymore. I did know that I was nothing like the person I was the year before. Cancer changed my life in so many ways. There were some pretty bad ways, but there were also some really good things that came out of it.
In November of 2011, my daughter gave me the best gift ever. She gave birth to my grand daughter. Taylor Lillian came into this world fighting. No one expected it and they still can't explain what happened, but her lungs wouldn't work on their own. She was born without a heartbeat and once again we found ourselves being told to prepare for a death. She showed them how much of her Nana she had in her. After three weeks in the NICU on life support, she beat the odds. She is a healthy, happy and very smart 2 year old. There were was no brain damage like they feared, from being deprived of oxygen. She is my world and she has held my heart in her hands since before she was born.
I am also very lucky to have such a supportive husband. He stuck by me side the whole way through. He let me take the time I needed to deal with everything, all the while holding my hand and encouraging me to find the new me.
That gets me to here. I asked myself what I wanted to do. It took me a little while, but I began to think about how much I loved to read. How much I had enjoyed writing, I have done a little poetry here and there over the years. I have even wrote a couple of short stories. Then it hits me. Why not do something that brings you joy and happiness? Why not give someone an escape from their world, for whatever reason they needed?
As I laid in bed one night thinking about it, Leigha was born. It was like, it was supposed to be. I had to get up and write everything in a notebook. It was like once I got the idea, Leigha took over and started telling me her story.
Once my first book was finished, I didn't know what to do. I had heard horror stories about trying to get published. Luck shined down on me once again. Talking to a family member at a reunion, I learned that she was an Author and was pretty successful at it. I talked to her several times after wards and she helped me through the process of self publishing my first book.
Wow! I wasn't planning on this being so long. Anyway, this is a little about me. If there is anything else you would like to ask me, feel free! =)
Until next time.
Much Love!
